Restaurant Sound System Installation

Music that is clearly there while a table of four can still talk. Zoned for the dining room, the bar, the patio and the private room, installed overnight in a room that never closes.

The real complaint

"It is too loud" and "we cannot hear each other" are the same problem.

They arrive as opposite complaints and they usually have one cause. The room is reflective, the music is coming from too few points, and so the only way to make it audible at the back table is to make it painful at the front one. Guests then raise their voices to be heard over it, which raises the room, which makes someone turn the music up again.

You cannot fix that with a better speaker. You fix it with more, smaller sources at lower individual levels, aimed down at the seating, and with something in the room that absorbs instead of reflecting.

A restaurant that sounds expensive is a restaurant where the music is clearly there and nobody is shouting. That is a coverage and level problem, and it is solvable.

What we design for

Zones, because a restaurant is not one room

  • Dining room. Even coverage at seated ear height, low enough that a table of four can talk, consistent from the window to the back wall. This is the zone that decides whether people stay for another course.
  • Bar. Louder, with some low end, because the bar is standing, social and noisier by design. On its own level and often its own source.
  • Patio or sidewalk. Separate, because the NYC noise code and your neighbours both have opinions, and because outdoor speakers need to be rated for weather and aimed inward rather than at the street.
  • Private room. Its own level and often its own input, so a party can have its own playlist without taking over the restaurant.
  • Back of house and bathrooms. Small, cheap, and the thing people notice when it is missing.
  • Host stand. Where intelligibility matters most and where the music is usually loudest, because it is near the door and near the bar. Worth treating as its own problem.

Hard won

What actually goes wrong in a restaurant install

The room does not close

Restaurants trade. The work happens overnight, in windows between the last table and the first delivery, and everything has to be made safe, clean and ready for service before the staff arrive. That shapes the sequence, the number of visits and the crew. It is the single biggest difference between installing in a restaurant and installing in a building site.

The ceiling is full

Kitchen exhaust, sprinkler mains, HVAC and decorative lighting are already up there, and they were installed by people who did not know a speaker was coming. Where a speaker wants to be and where it can be are often two different places, which is exactly why the design starts with a site visit and not a floor plan.

Dust and finishes

Drilling above a finished dining room means protecting surfaces, containing dust and leaving the room spotless, every single night. On rooms with a dark ceiling we have had the ceiling painted black as part of the work so that cable, brackets and fixtures disappear instead of drawing the eye.

The staff are the real users

If the interface has too many choices, a manager will find a workaround on a busy Friday and your careful zoning will be bypassed by a phone plugged into the bar input. So the control is deliberately simple, the maximum level is set in the processor rather than left to a knob, and the people who work the floor get the walkthrough, not just the owner.

Re-aim after the room is dressed

Soft furnishings, curtains, banquettes and a full room change the acoustics. Tuning a bare room and leaving is how a system ends up wrong. We set it once the room is finished, and ideally listen again when it is busy.

Why we know this room type

Over 20 years the core of our install work has been NYC hospitality: dozens of restaurants, lounges and event venues. That is why this page is about ceilings, overnight windows and who touches the volume, rather than about speaker brands. It is also why we will tell you when the honest answer is that your room needs two speakers moved and a processor set up properly rather than a new system.

Room too loud at the front and too quiet at the back?

We will walk it while it is busy, which is the only time the problem is actually visible, and send a design and an estimate.
